![]() If you’re looking to check PA off your list, or just looking for a good hill near NYC or Philadelphia, consider driving the extra 45 minutes to Elk, and thank me later. It was always easier for us to drive to a closer resort, but my family frequented Elk for the terrain and for the overall experience. Elk Mountain Ski Resort is a ski area in the Endless Mountains on the summit of North Knob in Herrick Township, Susquehanna County, near Union Dale. I grew up in Delaware, a little over three hours from Elk. In fact, Elk frequently uses the phrase, “It’s like skiing Vermont without the drive.” With ~1000 ft of vertical you can get some solid turns in before hopping back on the chair. The mountain feels larger than most in the Poconos. I personally recommend Susquehanna and Slalom. Most of the black trails at Elk feel closer to a black you would find in VT, or elsewhere in New England. One thing I love about Elk is the steep terrain. For an extra 45 mins to an hour, it is well worth the drive. The lift lines (only two major lifts, with one line) can get a big crowded during the mid day peak, but it was not too bad. The snow was decent in mid January, not too icy at all. It’s not super big, and the trails are not super long, but I had a good time. Ski Areas around Pennsylvania from the Poconos to Appalachians. No big restaurants at the base or summit lodges. Much different from the extravagance of Camelback or even Blue Mountain in PA. The Mountain is no frills basic lodge, nice bar with music and standard food. I thought it would be a huge inconvenience, but it’s really not that big of a deal. Parking is free, but you must take an open motor cab to the base. It’s a nice drive and that’s always a bonus. You can find the Elk Mountain Ski Resort in the northeastern Endless Mountain region, and you might be interested to know that the top elevation is 2,693 feet. Highway driving leads to back country roads, and then eventually to Elk. Elk doesn’t feel like it’s in Pennsylvania, rather somewhere in the central part of the country. A three hour drive from New York City, ELK Mountain in the northern Poconos is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
